WHAT SHOULD WE DO DURING THE ECLIPSE?

The following excerpt from 'Prabhupada Patrasudha' - the collection of letters of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Prabhupada makes it clear:

Duty of vaidha bhakta, a regulated, bonafide devotee, during the eclipse.

“There is no consideration of auspicious (proper) or inauspicious (improper) time for chanting”

All glories to Sri Guru and Sri Gauranga

Sri Gaudiya Matha , Kolkata

English calendar - 27.09.22

My dear—

I have received your letter dated 5th Aswin. We have sent the magazine ‘Gaudiya’ to Sri ***. There is no possibility of getting the old editions of ‘Gaudiya’ now. If, by chance, that is possible, we will let you know.

For a smarta, the period of the eclipse is inauspicious and impure. Hence, during this time, they do not perform the activities which they are prohibited to do during the impure condition. But vaidha bhaktas, the bonafide devotees, inclined towards loving devotional service do not wait for those mundane rituals. If possible, they should perform their duties of offering respective services to the Supreme Lord on time. The devotees used to take holy dip in the rivers and perform other rituals at the time when Sri Gaurasundar had not yet spread the message of bhakti, loving devotional service, on this earth. But after Mahaprabhu preached the glories of Holy Name of the Lord, it has been prescribed to only perform Hari Kirtan, the congregational chanting of Hare Krishna Mahamantra all the time. There is no consideration of auspicious (proper) or inauspicious (improper) time for chanting. Those who have the desire of collecting pious credits for material prosperity only engage in such consideration. During the eclipse, a bonafide devotee does not perform rituals like taking bath in Ganga, etc., i.e., they do not perform any fruitive activity desiring for the result. Today, I am going to Mathura Mandala to take bath in Sri Radha Kunda.

Your ever well-wisher

Sri Siddhanta Saraswati.
