vṛddhakumārīvākya nyāyaḥ (the wish of a spinster)
The Mahābhāṣya mentions the old virgin, which was asked by Indra, the king of heaven, to choose a boon from him. She said, “May my sons eat rice mixed with a lot of milk and ghī from a golden plate.”
This is a sign of good intelligence. If one knows what is in the best interest for him, and fulfills various needs with one strike only, then he is able to accomplish great things. In this case, the spinster received with a big smile on her face the husband, sons, food grains, ghī, cows, gold, and so on.
This lesson teaches us that a person definitely should not be much concerned with all the petty pleasures he wishes to achieve. Rather one has to be intelligent enough to find the ultimate pleasure of all pleasures. If we water the root of the tree, then automatically all the branches, leaves are nourished. Taittirīya Upaniṣad 2.7.1 mentions raso vai saḥ rasaṁ hy evāyaṁ labdhvānandī bhavati: "When one understands the Personality of Godhead, the reservoir of pleasure, Kṛṣṇa, he actually becomes transcendentally blissful." This is the guide for success in achieving not many, but all the facilities for a blissful and happy existence. Of course, if one understands this instruction, he must find an able representative of Kṛṣṇa, a true guru, who can uncover the details of how to achieve this, and not glide down to some misunderstandings in these matters.
