Active Nirvāṇa

Updated: Dec 17, 2020

Païjaramuktapakṣi nyāyaḥ (bird let loose from

A bird is let flying free from the prison of its cage.

However much we like our body, and everything connected with it by family ties, friendship, creation byproducts, and pleasures it gives us, if we omit the unavoidable pains, at one point we are forced to leave it behind, and take another, new and fresh one. It is exactly like changing old ragged clothes for nice new ones. In our example, it would mean just shift a bird from the old cage to a better, unused one. A sensible man will try to figure out a permanent solution for this ongoing inconvenience. The solution is offered by śāstra like Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 2.10.6, which states muktir hitvānyathā rūpaṁ sva-rūpeṇa vyavasthitiḥ. After giving (hitvā) up the present yet another alien (anyathā) material body (rūpaḥ), made of gross and subtle elements, one is truly liberated (mukti) only after gaining permanent status (vyavasthitiḥ) in his own spiritual form (sva-rūpeṇa), not formless, actively dedicated to the service to Viṣṇu. That denotes actual freedom.
